"On Board" Radar Training

Picture yourself in the fog or the darkness of night navigating with only your Radar and GPS/Chartplotter. It doesn't get any more realistic than this. Most non-commercial mariners only use about 25% of the capabilities of their instruments.

This five (5) hour class is held on Triple Play, the Boatwise 46 ft Post training vessel and will focus on the set up, use and interpretation of Radar, as well as your GPS Chartplotter, Autopilot and other associated navigation electronics.

A brief review of radar theory will be followed by an in depth review of the set up menu's and controls. About 4 of the 5 hours are spent underway actually using the instruments. Because the vessel is equipped with multiple displays, every student will have their own screen to use. We will discuss/demonstrate collision avoidance and navigation techniques using both Radar and Chartplotter information at hand. Other topics covered will include the use of the Radar MARPA target tracking functions as well as AIS and Radar/chart overlay and setting up guard zones. We will also build and edit waypoints and routes on the Chartplotter.

Because the class is held at night, an introduction to "night cruising" will be part of the fun. The course includes a class syllabus. Class held in Newburyport Harbor.

The Boatwise training vessel is a 46 ft Post Sportfisherman (see photo on left of screen) which is equipped with the latest in Raymarine "E-Series" electronics

Voyage Planning and Execution

This five (5) hour underway class will start by developing the plan for a local voyage using both conventional plotting and electronic techniques. Once the courses and support information are developed, the class will execute the voyage, using the plan. The voyage will include a brief stop at the destination port of Rockport, MA (docking subject to space available). The demonstration and use of all electronic navigation instruments will include Radar, Chartplotters, Auto Pilot and Sonar. This class is meant to teach the mariner the steps in planning a voyage to destinations they have not visited before.

Tuition: $249.00 - Min: 3 students; Max: 6 students

Night Cruising Classes

Cruising at night is spectacular, but often intimidating. This 5 hour underway class will show the mariner how to use the available night time "aids to navigation" as well as the other tools to determine position and safe course info. After some instruction, the class will be brought to an unknown location and asked to establish their position and develop a safe course back to home harbor w/o electronics.

Tuition: $249.00 - Min: 3 students; Max: 6 students
