Course Policies & Rules

Attendance

Students must attend all classroom hours of instruction. This is mandated by the United States Coast Guard.

Grading

Students are required by US Coast Guard to achieve the following on the Boatwise final test:

  • Rules – 90% (70% Limited Master/Launch Tender)
  • Plotting – 70%
  • Nav Gen – 70%
  • Deck Gen – 70%

Students are given three opportunities to pass each section on the Exam.

Application must be submitted to the US Coast Guard before the one year anniversary of completion of the course (date on the Certificate awarded after completion of tests).

Satisfactory Progress

Students will be given a written progress report at the half way point of the class. This must be signed by both the Instructor and the Student. A copy will be given to the student and one filed in the Student file.

Withdrawal

If a student withdraws from a Program in accordance with the School’s withdrawal policy, the School shall:

  • treat the withdrawal as a termination of the enrollment contract, effective immediately;
  • complete a refund calculation for the student, including all fees and payments, in a form acceptable to the division; and
  • provide the calculation and any refund to the student within 45 days of the effective date of the termination

If a student stops attending School but does not withdraw in accordance with the School’s withdrawal policy, the School shall:

  • for purposes of any payments due from the student or refund due to the student, treat the student’s non-attendance as a termination of the enrollment contract, effective no later than the last date of attendance or last participation in an instructional activity;
  • determine the effective date of the termination within 30 days after the end of the period of enrollment, the term, or the Program, whichever is earliest;
  • complete a refund calculation for the student, including all fees and payments, in a form acceptable to the division; and
  • provide the calculation and any refund to the student within 45 days from the date the School determines the effective date of termination under 230 CMR 15.04(8)(b).

Guidance and Counseling

If a student feels the need for further assistance outside of the class time they should first discuss this with the Captain instructing the class. If additional assistance is needed they are to call into the Boatwise Office at 603-394-0412 to arrange for tutoring.

Job Placement

Boatwise offers no job placement assistance.

Complaint Resolution

If a student has any sort of complaint, it should first be addressed with the Captain instructing the class. If a satisfactory resolution is not obtained, then the problem should be directed to the Owner via email at captains@boatwise.com.

The student may contact The Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure’s Office of Private Occupational School Education occupational.schools@mass.gov or 617-701-8719.

Per 230 CMR 15.07(2) a school shall respond to written student complaints in writing within ten days from when the complaint was submitted to the school.

If the Owner’s final determination is in favor of the school, the student may then contact:

School Rules

Any student disrupting the flow of the class will be required to meet with the Captain after the class. The student and the Captain will discuss the student behavior and decide if continuation of the course is in the best interest of the student/class as a whole.

A Student’s enrollment will be terminated as a result of improper conduct, which in the opinion of the Instructor is detrimental to the learning process of other students in the class.

Refund Policy (Students in NH, RI, ME, VT, CT)

To officially cancel or terminate the agreement, the student must notify Boatwise directly by contacting the administration office at captains@boatwise.com.

Notice of Cancellation must be received 14 days before the start of the class.
All refunds shall be paid within 14 days upon written notification from a student of cancellation or withdrawal.

Transfer Credit:

There are no courses that a student might have taken in the past that are transferable into Boatwise Marine Training.
Students receiving benefits from federal programs shall be subject to federal refund policies, rules and regulations.
